Rainwater Catchment System Part of Modern, Green Design for Affordable Housing Project
HONOLULU (August 17, 2010) – Green Builder’s Depot, Hawaii’s only certified green building materials store, recently supplied 90 Rainwater HOGs to Armstrong Builders in an effort to support the construction company’s commitment to provide quality, innovative and affordable housing options for working families. Armstrong Builders will install the rainwater collection and storage tanks at two new subdivisions that it is building in partnership with the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands in Kona and Waimanalo. The water conservation devices are among the many green design features that will help Lai Opua and Kuuhau homeowners save money and reduce water consumption.

The Rainwater HOG is a modular tank that can collect up to 51 gallons of rainwater. Its compact size allows it to be easily installed and connected to other HOGs for larger volumes of rainwater storage in tighter spaces. Although the HOG is made out of food grade plastic that meets FDA standards for food contact, rainwater collected in the HOG is not intended for drinking or cooking. The water can be used for watering gardens and lawns as well as for toilet flushing, laundry washing and bathing. Armstrong Builders plans to install the Rainwater HOGs, available exclusively at Green Builder’s Depot, along the homes’ carports where it will harvest rainwater from the carport roof and house roof.
