Case Study 4: Nundah School Nundah, Queensland, Australia
Overview
A commercial installation of 114 HOGs storing 5,700 gallons (20,520 liters) was designed for Nundah School in Queensland, Australia. Average yearly rainfall for the area is 47.2 inches.
The HOGs were custom molded in the school colors of yellow and black, with UV stabilizing additives to minimize fading over the life of the building. The HOGs hold a total of 5,700 gallons which is used primarily for toilet flush within the buildings, with excess tapped for garden irrigation.
The HOGs are grouped around the new Nundah school library to harvest rainwater from every downspout. On the downhill side of the building the elevated HOGs provide serious water pressure for downhill hosing. They demonstrate to the students the difference in water pressure between HOGs located on level - supplying up to 2 PSI of pressure - with those elevated significantly above level and supplying significantly more pressure. The Nundah library building uses ultra-low-flush Caroma toilets and flushing these with HOGs saves the school more than 28,000 gallons of city water per year.
Additionally, Nundah School has utilized the Rainwater HOGs as learning tools in the areas of math, science, and studies of society and the environment. Water-wise youngsters have a chance to see rainwater collection and reuse in action, and are introduced to the concept of multipurpose design through the HOGs, which can also be used to provide thermal mass, as well as an emergency water supply.
