Overview

Rainwater HOG helped David Gottfried, founder of US Green Building Council (USGBC) and LEED, to achieve the highest scoring green home remodel since the launch of LEED for Homes. Gottfried’s LEED Platinum Craftsman bungalow remodel scored 106.5 out of a possible 136 points.

David Gottfried explains his super-green home thus: “It’s smaller, super-efficient, has a tight environmental footprint and there’s almost no waste.”

Average monthly rainfall for Oakland, CA is 1.92 inches. HOGs are deployed at several downspouts for different purposes: Six HOGs and a system by Hyphae Design Lab (www.hyphae.net) flush the family toilet with rainwater for more than 9 months of the year.  One HOG collects rainwater from Gottfried’s “Lifepod” office for watering the family’s edible garden. Two horizontal HOGs collect bathroom grey water and filter it for reuse on the garden.  A total of 9 Rainwater HOGs with 350 gallons of rainwater storage and 100 gallons grey water storage reduce the Gottfried’s water use by approximately 50 percent.
